A Simple Morning Routine That Fits Into Five Minutes

Skin-care routines online can run to ten steps or more. That is fine if you enjoy it, but most people want something that fits between waking up and getting out the door. A short routine done every day beats an elaborate one done twice a month.

Step one: rinse or cleanse

Many people find a splash of lukewarm water is enough in the morning, especially if they washed properly the night before. If your skin feels oily on waking, use a gentle cleanser. Skip hot water, which can leave skin feeling tight.

Step two: moisturize

Apply a moisturizer suited to your skin while your face is still slightly damp. Spread it over the face and neck. If you like serums, this is where one could go, before the moisturizer, but it is entirely optional.

Step three: sunscreen

This is the step worth protecting above all others. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen as the last skin-care layer, before makeup. Give it a minute to settle before applying anything on top.

Make it easy to repeat

Line up your three products in the order you use them. Put them where you will see them. If you travel, decant them into small containers so the routine comes with you.

When to add something

Once the basics are a habit, you might want to add one product for a specific goal. Introduce it alone, use it for several weeks, and watch how your skin responds. If you are unsure about an active ingredient or have a skin condition, a pharmacist or doctor can give advice that fits your situation.

What to leave out

Harsh scrubs every morning, multiple strong actives at once, and constant product swapping tend to cause more trouble than they solve.

The real secret

There is no secret, really. Clean, moisturized, protected. Do it daily and give it time.
